Our Families
The Martin Family

Our story, like many others', begins with infertility. After a few years of marriage, we decided to grow our family. It became evident in 1994 that we would have problems having a biological child. We tried many things in the infertility arena, but in 1999, decided that adoption was the way that God had decided that we would grow our family.

In September 1996, I (Kimberly) attended a seminar by A Helping Hand. I immediately had a good feeling about Chinese adoption. Before this meeting, I knew nothing about international adoption. Now, it felt right. Unfortunately, I had just started dental school, which is a rigorous 4-year process. The timing just wasn't right.

In January 1999, my husband saw an ad in the Lexington Herald Leader, advertising a seminar that A Helping Hand was having in Lexington. We decided to attend. For me, it was like coming home. I wondered what Andy would think. I knew that if it were up to me, the paperchase would start as soon as I left the meeting. I put up our application and prayed that God would let us know if this was the time for us to grow our family. On February 7th (Andy's birthday) he gave me one of the best presents that has ever been given. He asked me, "Where is the application for A Helping Hand?" Let me assure you that it flew out of my desk, into my hands and was filled out and mailed within moments!

Our dossier was finished and presented to AHH on July 1, 1999. Our daughter was born on July 2 (actually July 1 here). Our dossier was logged into the CCAA on July 12, 1999 and we received our referral of Guo Hong Li on January 31, 2000. We were fortunate, in that all of our travel mates from AHH were in the Lexington area. We met several times before we traveled and it was a great help while we were in China.

Our trip was great. I cannot say enough positive things about A Helping Hand's staff in the US and in China. Peter was our guide throughout China, with Chris in Wuhan and Rebecca being our guide in Guangzhou. Without them, I am not sure if we could have gotten thru the maze of the cities and the maze of the paperwork. We had a couple of glitches along the way and they smoothed out EVERYTHING.

On April 10, 2000, Andy and I became first time parents. Regan Suzanne Li was ours! She came to us bundled in many layers with split pants (if you don't know what these are, email me and I will tell you) and NO DIAPER! I cannot tell you how quickly I wanted to put a diaper on her! She was absolutely beautiful. We were in a group of 11 other families, and all the girls were beautiful. Of the 12 families growing their family that day, 5 are already in the process to grow their families again. Just ask me about Regan and I will tell you how great she is!

As of August 16, 2001, we are going back for another. Our home study is finished and will hopefully be going to the state this next week. With international adoption, you never know how things will change. The waiting time may increase or decrease; there may be changes in the requirements or many other things. One thing though is sure, if you pray, God will show you His way.
